Description
German text. This map rarely makes it onto the open market, and this is a rare opportunity to add it to a collection.
This small woodblock map was the subject of some articles in the journal of historical cartography, Imago Mundi, beginning in 1949; at that time, an illustration of the map appeared under the heading “An unknown world map,” accompanied by a plea calling for any information that would help identify it.
The following year, a letter to the editor identified the map as a reduced version of Schedel’s world map from the Nuremberg Chronicle, 1493. Several years later, the issue was taken up again when Marcel Destombes responded with an article noting that the map was from a reduced edition of the Chronicle, published in Augsburg by Johann Schonsperger in 1496.
