The 'Cosmographia' is famous for its many highly attractive double - or even four-page cityscapes. Many of these illustrations are remarkable for their almost house-for-house level of accuracy, and as a collection, the uniformity of quality was unprecedented at that time.
The level of detail accomplished by the artists who prepared the woodblocks is amazing: children play, soldiers drill, fishermen and farmers work, and criminals dangling from the gallows. We see ships on nearby waterways, or in battle, windmills, waterwheels, lighthouses, vineyards, and of course the majestic city walls.
