Description
A spectacular view of Venice, with a highly decorative border consisting of ribbons bearing the coats of arms of locations in the Venetian Empire, interlaced within branches of laurel, a traditional symbol of Victory.
The map, in Dutch, is not recorded in Moretto (#118) and is of the utmost rarity. Only the French edition is recorded by Moretto. The only difference appears to be the naming of the "Meeren Van Venetien" in this example, rather than "Lagunes de Venise," which appear here at the top and bottom of the view.
In comparing the images, which include identical page numbers in the upper left corners (i.e.: 'Tom. IV. Pag. 175', it would appear that the Dutch edition pre-dates the French edition, as the impression on the French edition is weaker and shows signs of having been re-engraved in the areas noted.
The engraver of this rare view is unknown, but its believed to be Jan Lansvelt. A very similar view appeared in Dumont's Voyages de Mr. du Mont en France, en Italie..., but with a slightly different title.
