Description
Map information is naturally confined to coastal information, the Maldive Islands shown, rhumb lines abound. With reefs, sandbanks with mountains and hills in relief.
Herbert is perhaps best known for his A New Directory for the East-Indies . . .a set of sailing directions originally published by William Herbert, William Nichelson and Samuel Dunn and later expanded by Gabriel Wright.
Herbert first published his atlas of sea charts based on French Neptune Oriental in 1758, with this second edition appearing the following year. Herbert travelled to India ca 1748, as a purser's clerk aboard an East Indiaman. By the early 1750s he had established himself as a printer and seller of engravings, prints and charts on London Bridge.
