Description
Engraved by Baptist, after Lairesse and Tideman. The title page shows a woman (Europe) kneeling on a chariot, pointing at a large globe, beside her sit a pair of Lions, and a female scribe.
There is also a pair of cherubs with dividers, Neptune, is seen leaning up against the globe, holding his Trident. Standing on top of the globe is a winged angel blowing a trumpet, with the title banner attached to it.
In the background, Atlas is seen with the World upon his shoulders.
The second is the uncolored title page from Volume 1 of Moses Pitt's The English Atlas, designed by Zacharias Webbers. It shows Cybele, the mother goddess of the earth, holding a pair of dividers over a large globe, centered on Europe and Africa.
Neptune is seen to her left, with Trident in hand, a Lion is at her feet, and a muse (perhaps) representing geography or history is seated below Neptune. In the background, Atlas holds a large Celestial globe on his shoulders, while above him winged putti hold aloft a banner style title. Size: 465 x 290 mm.
