Description
This set of three (3) antique prints originate from: 'The Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, par une Société de Gens de lettres.' which was published under the direction of Diderot and d'Alembert in Paris in 1771.
The articles written by the most prominent philosophers of the time. These great minds collaborated in the goal of assembling and disseminating the fruits of accumulated knowledge and learning. Containing 72,000 articles written by more than 140 contributors, it was a massive reference work for the arts and sciences that served to propagate enlightened ideas. The first edition was issued over a period of 21 years, with an original printing of approximately 4,000 copies.
There were 17 Plates dealing with 'Astronomie, Instrumens', (Astronomy, Instruments.) including telescope, quadrants, seceurs, various metres, instruments etc. These are the instruments that mapmakers used daily. You are bidding on a group of three of these copper engravings including:
