Description
Includes inset view of Potosí with church at summit, dwellings, and windmills.
Decorative cartouche includes native Americans with parasol, spear, rolls of tobacco, pot of gold coins, gold bars, feathered headdress, natural bridge and volcanos.
Also included are the Solomon Islands and the western coast of Africa.
Herman Moll was probably born in Bremen, Germany, around 1654. He moved to London to escape the Scanian Wars. He was one of the first to record wind directions based on sustained scientific observations. Moll also gives sometimes harsh criticism of Sanson whose maps have been condemned, and found to be notoriously false even by the Royal Academy, and others of his own country….
He also accuses the Dutch of copying his maps.
Moll started as an engraver and worked for Pitt, Sir Jonas Moore, Grenville Collins, John Adair, and the Seller & Price firm. He published his first original maps in the early 1680s and had set up his own shop by the 1690s.
