Description
The inset in the lower left corner traces the river's source, where the Hinter Rhein and the Vorder Rhein merge in southeast Switzerland. The main body of this map shows the rest of the Rhine River and its surrounding regions.
The map includes two decorative cartouches, one of which incorporates a view of Landau. An early thematic battle theatre map. Battle scene outside the city of Landaw below the upper cartouche. In the lower cartouche Bacchus, the god of wine, offers a toast.
Johann Baptist Homann, was a German engraver and publisher from Nuremberg. He published his first atlas, "Atlas Novus" in 1707, and in recognition of this achievement, he was elected to the Berlin Academy of Sciences.
In 1715 Homann was appointed Geographer to the Emperor. Homann died in 1724 and his business was continued by his family under the name Homann Heirs into the late 18th century.
