Description
John Speed produced the first English atlas of the world and his maps are prized for their decorative quality.
It is from Speed’s atlas “Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World" (1627). There is old English text on the verso that describes Hungary, as known to the English at the beginning of the 17th century.
John Speed (1552-1629) is the most famous English cartographer of any period, as a result of his atlases “The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine ”and “ Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World’. The individual maps are the best known and among the most sought-after of all county maps.
The maps themselves were derived from the best and most up-to-date sources available. However, Speed also made innovations of his own - introducing town plans on many of the maps, including county boundaries on almost all maps and also the coats of arms of local Earls and Dukes as well the Royal arms. The overall effect is to produce very decorative, attractive and informative maps.
The text on the reverse describes that county, its industry and agriculture, its physical features and history. Early editions of the "Theatre Of The Empire Of Great Britaine" were published by John Sudbury and George Humble.
Maps with figured borders: "Carte à bordure" maps. The aesthetic element played an important role in the success of Amsterdam's map production. Special products were the maps with decorative borders, ("cartes-à-figures") which were published for the world, the four continents and various European countries and regions.
The map decoration was relegated to the map borders in order not to detract from the actual contents of the map.
