Description
The Atlas was re-issued in 1762, 1763, 1764, 1767, 1779 & 1887, and in 1794 as The English Atlas.
The maps bear the imprints of John Bowles, Carington Bowles and Sayer (some having a gap where Tinney's name has been removed), with the maps of Buckinghamshire and Worcestershire dated 1756. Includes inset views or plans of major cities, including prospects of Ely, York, Leeds, Cardiff and Chichester.
Includes : a general map of England and Wales (Kitchin), a map of North Britain and Scotland (printed for John Bowles, Carington Bowles and Sayer), Ireland (C. and J. Bowles and Sayer) and 44 county maps by Bowen and Kitchin, printed by or for various publishers between 1749 and 1760 and including : Buckinghamshire (T. and J. Bowles and Sayer, 1756) , Cornwall with inset map of the Isles of Scilly (Kitchin) , Cambridgeshire with inset view 'Prospect of Ely' (Bowen) , Devon with inset plan of Plymouth (J. and C. Bowles and Sayer, n.d.) , Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire (J. and C. Bowles, and Sayer, 1760) , Middlesex flanked by coats of arms (n.d.) , Norfolk (1749, C. and J. Emanuel Bowen was one of the leading mid-century map and print sellers. He was also an accomplished engraver, appointed to George II and to Louis XV of France, and is probably best known for the elegant county maps in his "Large English Atlas" (R. W. Shirley, Printed maps of the British Isles 1650-1750).
