Description
The map appeared in Johannes Pontanus’ “Historische beschrijvinghe der seer wijdberoemde koop-stad Amsterdam”. The map, engraved by Jodocus Hondius, is a reduction of Claesz.' 3descriptio Hydrographica" of 1598.
It shows the route of Dutch merchants to the Indies and, in a panel along the top, illustrations of native characters in traditional dress from Africa, the Middle East, South East Asia and China. Relief is shown pictorially.
The map illustrates the extent of commercial expansion, and the growth in Dutch knowledge of Africa and Asia in the 16 years since the Cornelis de Houtman's pioneering voyage of exploration and commerce to Asia in 1595.
This is the second state, with the addition of three sea monsters, two sea lions and eight beautifully engraved ships, some of which are in battle.
