Description
The six (out of 12) gores show the western hemisphere with a cartouche in the northern Pacific with a decorative border. California is shown as a peninsula, Canada with no northern coastline and no detail in the Western part; a simple section of the partial coastline is shown for Alaska. New Zealand is shown as a stretch of the western coastline.
Peter Anich made use of the works of Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr and J.M. Hase and did give credit in the cartouche. Anich was also known for his 1756 construction under the guidance of Weinhart large celestial globe with approximately one meter in diameter. In 1759 he followed with a terrestrial globe of the same size; both globes can be found in the Tyrolean State Museum. He also designed several smaller terrestrial and celestial globes, among this 20cm diameter globe. Anich himself carried out the engraving.
Johann Matthias Hase (1684-1742, also known as Haas, was a professor of Mathematics at the University of Wittenberg from 1720, but his most enduring fame was as a cartographer.
Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr may be considered one of the most famous scientists of Nuremberg, Germany. He was born in Nuremberg in 1677, studied in Altdorf and Halla, and traveled for some time in Germany, the Netherlands, and England. Between 1728 and 1736, he published three pairs of globes: in 1728, a pair with a diameter of 32cm; in 1730, a pair with a diameter of 20cm and in 1736, a pair with a diameter of 10cm.
