Original lithograph plate from 'L'Estampe moderne', Vol. 1, no. 3, July 1897, as a premium plate for purchasers of one-year subscription to the publication; distributed as a free supplement with this issue; printed by L’Imprimerie Champenois, distributed by Masson & Pizza.
With blindstamped at lower right (L’Estampe Moderne stamp). L’Estampe Moderne is a French monthly publication published between May 1897 and April 1899, which proposed 4 original lithographs in each of its issues.
Alfons Maria Mucha, born in Ivančice on July 24, 1860 and died in Prague on July 14, 1939, is a Czech poster designer, illustrator, graphic designer, painter, interior designer and decorator, spearhead of the Art Nouveau style.
"Mucha was probably the single most famous and influential artist of the whole Art Nouveau movement in Europe. The lithograph he drew for L'Estampe Moderne, 'Salammbo- L'Incantation' is an outstanding example of the finest period of his decorative style…With its combination of an exotic richness, an overt and luxuriant sensuality, and the marvelous flowing sinuous patterns of line and color it created a whole new era of taste" (Weston No.1 1999, 28)
