Description
Only a few of Johannes Loots'sea charts have survived to modern times, mostly because mariners used thems at sea.
Johannes Loots (1665 - 1726) was active from 1693 until he died in 1726. Loots began his career with Hendrick Doncker. Several charts from this maker were offered separately.
In 1707, Loots sold 100 charts to Gerard Van Keulen. In 1707, Loots seemed to have purchased the plates of Jacob Robijn.
Loots' charts are extremely rare on the market. According to the information in raremaps.com, just 5 charts of Loots were offered for sale at auction or in catalogues in the last 30 years or so.
Berthelot was a professor for hydrography in Marseille and published, in 1691 an "Abrégé de la Navigation, contenant ce qui est nécessaire de savoir de la théorie de cet Art, pour conduire les Bâtiments sur la Méditerranée; avec des explications touchant les Erreurs attachées à la routine des Navigateurs".
