Description
This sheet, focusing almost all on Canadian territory, features Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Island, Newfoundland, Labrador, the great fishing banks off the northeast coast of Canada.
The map extends from Casco Bay to Greenland, including Newfoundland and the Bay of St. Lawrence, with the tiny island of Bermuda also included.
The title “Partie Orientale de l'Amerique Angloise” and imprint appear in the upper right corner, and is one of two titles for this flexible two sheet map, allowing Mortier to use the same map joined, in his “Neptune François”, or as separate sheets as is available here in his “Atlas Nouveau”.
This is the rare, stand-alone, (with its own left side border) large right sheet of this two sheet map. These maps are quite rare with the joined set selling for up to $5,000 on the Internet.
Pieter Mortier (1661–1711) was an 18th-century mapmaker and engraver from the Northern Netherlands.
