Description
The chart records most of the early Dutch discoveries in Australia including Hartog's (1616), Houtman's (1619), the van Leeuwin's in 1622, de Witt's (1628), Nuyts' (1627) and Castensz's discoveries on Cape York Peninsula in 1623.Japan is shown on the Blaeu-Martini model whilst the coastlines of Western Australia are based on early Dutch discoveries and the surveys of Abel Tasman during his two milestone voyages of the early 1640's.
Louis Renard obtained De Wit's plates following the latter's death in 1706, and used them for his own Atlas "Atlas de la Navigation et du Commerce", up to 1739. No large changes to the plates are made, the plate number 19 removed and "Fol. 21" added in upper right corner. The plates than passed on to R. and J. Ottens.

We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
