Description
World Map of
the utmost rarity by Dancker Danckerts, from 1658, and found in a scarce
Gorinchem Bible published in 1665. This is the first time we are offering this map. The first copy of this world map was discovered
only forty years ago. Since then just four or five copies have been offered to
the market.
It is one of the earliest world maps to provide the newly
discovered location of the south western coasts and lands of Australia as the
results of the Tasman’s first voyage to Australia and Tasmania (‘A van Diemens
Landt’). During his voyage Tasman also discovered New Zealand, but this is not
yet included on the map. California is correctly depicted as a peninsular. Other
parts of the map Danckerts took from an even rarer world map by Van Langren
(1594), including its oval projection, which is uncommon for maps published
after the 16th century.
The map is highly decorative. It includes two celestial spheres that are displayed in the Eastern Hemisphere and allegorical representations of the continents in the corners, as well as native inhabitants and wildlife surrounding the map. To balance the celestial spheres, Danckerts added two putti holding a banner with his imprint in the Western Hemisphere, one of them even swinging a trident. With beautiful calligraphic lettering.
Dancker Danckerts had a relatively short life (1634-1666) and only a few maps with his signature are extant. After his early death, his brother Justus stopped publishing Bible maps. The other Danckerts maps found in Gorinchem Bible, are also offered in this auction.

Condition / Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
