Description
It is also one of the earliest world maps to show some of the discoveries in Australia from Abel Tasman’s first voyage. Australia and Van Diemen's Land are shown, but the north coast of Australia discovered during Tasman's second voyage of 1644 is not yet shown. The presentation of western North America is certainly interesting.
In the corners, the four continents are shown in allegorical form with examples of their animal life and inhabitants. Two celestial spheres and two spherical maps are also added. There is a lengthy annotation on the discovery of America and recent circumnavigations.
Claes Janszoon Visscher (1587 – 1652) was a Dutch Golden Age draughtsman, engraver, mapmaker and publisher. After his father, Visscher, who was born and died in Amsterdam, was also known as Nicolas Joannis Visscher II. He learned the art of etching and printing from his father and helped grow the family printing and mapmaking business to one of the largest in his time. It was a family business; Nicolaes Visscher I (1618–1679), and Nicolaes Visscher II (1649–1702) were also mapmakers in Amsterdam on the Kalverstraat.
