Description
During this period his cartographic image of New England, based on a combination of earlier sources, was intended both to delight and instruct the would-be immigrant who might consult this map before making the journey across the Atlantic.
A most interesting feature is a strait cutting through Cape Cod in the area of Eastham, which historical records indicate existed at the time. New Jersey is divided into East and West Jersey and so named.
The map highlights that as the number of English settlements increased in the area, Native American tribal names are notably less plentiful than on the Dutch maps of the previous century. The decorative title cartouche shows a European bartering with an Indian for an animal pelt, one of the mainstays of the early New England economy.
The cartouche also reveals what the European was offering for trade, including beads, a barrel (presumably filled with liquor), guns, hatchets, tools, and textiles. The map extends from the Delaware Bay in the south north to Quebec. and the St. Lawrence River.

Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
