Description
This is the earliest printed map of the county of Northumberland, and was engraved by William Hole, one of the first recorded British map engravers.
The title cartouche, in the shape of an open book, is very interesting, the compass rose is very ornate.
“Britannia”, first published in 1586, was one of the most popular and influential books of the period. This work was of the Elizabethan antiquarian, William Camden (1551-1623), it was a detailed historical and topographical description of Great Britain.
Published between 1607 and 1637, the county maps engraved by William Kip and William Hole, were based largely on Christopher Saxton's earlier surveys.
Camden's 'Britannia' continued to be published until 1815, From 1695 to 1772, the English county maps produced by Robert Morden were used, and from 1789 to c.1815, those by the renowned John Cary were used.
