Description
There are several versions of this map, this 5th state, of 9 cataloged so far, with some important additions. Publisher's imprint at bottom center removed although "Smith & Jones..." still appears at right.
The original French version is titled: CARTE GENERALE DES ETATS-UNIS DE L'AMERIQUE SEPTENTRIONALE, Divisee En Ses 17 Provinces.
This example is actually from "The history of the discovery and settlement, to the present time, of North & South America : and of the West-Indies" by William Mavor.". See # 14a.2 in the "Carto-Bibliography... of Franklin"
The region from the Great Lakes to northern Florida and west to the Mississippi is shown. Pennsylvania appears without the Erie triangle acquired in 1792. A road is shown across southern Pennsylvania going on into Ohio.
This is a fascinating map of the United States shortly after the American Revolutionary War, as the new country was struggling to resolve issues of state vs. Federal Sovereignty, where the ambitious could stake out there own regions and build trade empires on loosely placed frontiers.
The map include two such colonies FRANKLINIA and MORGANIA.
The map includes 'Franklinia', the one time state of Franklin, named after Benjamin Franklin. It was formed in 1784 by settlers with John Sevier as governor, but never officially recognized by Congress. Sevier later became the first governor of Tennessee, admitted in 1796, and the state of Franklin was reannexed to North Carolina. Thus, the map would appear to represent the country as it was between 1784 and 1792 or 1796.
Morgania is the failed colony of Colonel George Morgan (1743-1810). The state only appears on a few maps between 1799 and 1809 and subsequently vanished from historical memory.
Scale: 1 inch = 105 miles.
