Description
From the vantage point atop New Jersey's Bergen Hill, a maturing Central Park is shown amidst the early stages of urban expansion on the Upper East Side and Upper West Side.
New York is depicted as a busy port city, with a variety of boats active in the Hudson and East Rivers. Brooklyn, Queens and Northern New Jersey are also shown with City Hall, the financial district, Greenwich village, Chinatown, The Battery, Tribeca and Roosevelt Island all identified.
Of historical note are the two towers of the Brooklyn Bridge completed in 1875, but there is no progress shown yet connecting the towers across the east River.
The map is a wood block engraving by Robert Loudan after Thomas Sulman in 1876. A couple of these maps are currently available on the Internet in the $4,900 - $6,800 range but one sold by Christies Auction House in June, 2015 for $12,500.
Thomas Sulman (1834 –1900) was an English Architectural draftsman. Sulman studied at The Working Men’s College between 1854 and 1858, where he was a student of, and later an engraver for, Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
He became a specialist in using balloons to produce birds-eye views of cities including London, Oxford, Glasgow and New York City. These views, as hand-colored engravings produced with the help of London engraver Robert Loudan Sr., were featured in The Illustrated London News from the 1860's, and were sometimes produced to a fold-out, six foot in length.

Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipping fee
A flat shipping fee of $ 30 is added to each shipment by DHL within Europe and North America. This covers : International Priority shipping, Packing and Insurance (up to the invoice amount).
Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
We charge only one shipping fee when you have been successful on multiple items or when you want to combine gallery and auction purchases.
