Description
This historical map offers a depiction of the United States between the Treaty of Guadalupe Hildalgo and the Civil War. It shows North America during an important territorial and cultural expansion period following the Mexican-American war and the height of the California Gold Rush.
The California Gold Region around Sacramento, between the Sierra Nevada’s and the Coastal Ranges, is highlighted yellow. Despite Monk’s bold highlight of the Gold Region, it remains oddly inaccurate. Auburn is situated north of Sacramento, between Marysville and Yuba City.
The map shows the western territories as they existed at the time, with New Mexico extending from California to Texas, Utah reaching from California to Kansas, and Washington and Oregon extending eastward to Nebraska Territory.
The huge Nebraska Territory rests between Washington and Oregon at the Continental Divide and the unsettled Minnesota that shows a large Plateau de Coteau du Missouri in the region of unnamed Dakota.
Nebraska Territory itself is shown at its fullest extent from Kansas to the border with British America (Canada). Oklahoma is divided into three American Indian Nations, the Chah-Lah-Kee, the Muscogee, and the Chah-Ta. The map also names numerous other American Indian tribes. The map shows a mis-projected Texas with the pre-Gadsden purchase border with Mexico.
The explorations of Pope and Nicollet are reflected in the newly formed Minnesota Territory and the Hydrographical Basin of the Mississippi River.
Several wagon routes and proposed railroads and springs, mountain passes, forests, swamps, and deserts are shown. The shipping lanes along both the east and west coasts are featured with numerous vignettes showing sailing ships. A large inset map in the lower-left quadrant shows a map of the world on a Mercator Projection. To the right of this is a chart detailing the distances between 1200 cities, towns, and counties of the United States. Features an elaborate decorative border with a floral, baroque-like motif. This map is a stunning and informative wall map of North America.
Jacob Monk (fl. c. 1850 - c. 1860) was a Baltimore-based American publisher of wall, pocket, and case format maps active in the mid-19th century. Monk's maps are quite popular and enjoyed wide distribution in the 19th century.
