Description
Basilius Besler (1591-1629) was a pharmacist by training and worked in Nuremberg. He set up a garden in Nuremberg, and became a well known botanist where he lived. After being instructed by the Bishop of Eichstatt to create a botanical garden.
They were probably the first comprehensive botanical gardens devoted to flowering plants, many of which were imported from the Americas and the Ottoman Empire. Besler began writing a simple herbal devoted to plants of medicinal value, however under the patronage of Prince Bishop he was able to expand his work into a massive herbal the "Hortus Eytettensis" (The Garden of Eichstatt).
The plates represent over 1000 flowers many appearing for the first time. The volumes took 16 years to complete and only three hundred copies were published in the first edition of 1613.
