Description
On board a ship returning home from the Pacific Theater, John Drury got together with other soldiers and drafted several sketch maps based on details from their experiences.
By the time he reached port, he had sold over 200 copies and used the momentum to found the Mem-O-Map publishing company. He went on to produce five maps of the Pacific and European theaters, each containing blank spaces for American G.I.’s to input their own personal story directly onto the image.
The accompanying illustrations, often bordering on crude or racist, depict items of particular interest to the American soldier.
This map of the Philippines is no exception, showing insects (an incessant irritant), cigars, and natural landmarks used as points of reference during the campaign.
Although the image uses bright color and charming illustration to give the impression of levity, it also shows darker aspects of the Philippine operations, albeit in a largely reduced tone.
The trail of the Bataan death march is prominently displayed, including several stopover points, as are the fortress island of Corregidor and the horrible POW encampment at Cabanatuan.
