Description
The brothers; Christopher and John Greenwood were responsible for the most important commercial survey of England and Wales executed in the nineteenth century.
It resulted in a series of separately-published wall maps of the counties drawn on the ambitious scale of 1” to the mile which were printed on up to nine sheets each.
These were later reduced, printed on elephant folio sheets, and published in four parts between 1828 and 1834 as Greenwood’s “Atlas of the Counties of England”. This is deemed to be the finest map ever issued featuring Devon County.
Greenwood's English county maps are justly famous for their fine engraving, accuracy, and great wealth of detail. Each locates wards, parishes, turnpikes, roads, toll bars, churches and chapels, castles and priories, heaths, commons, canals, railways, woods, parks and pleasure grounds, wind and water mills, country houses, and a vast amount of topographical detail.
Each is also ornamented with a finely engraved vignette of an important county building -- this map of Devon features Exeter Cathedral in the lower right corner.
