Description
Charming 1908 Guide book to with several photos and 3 folding plans of Manilla. Published by the "Manila merchants' association", directed by O'Connell, Daniel. With a charming cobver illustration.
The black and white printed photographic illustrations consist of 15 pages with 2 images per page, and 3 of full page images. The folding plans at the rear include: "Walled City of Manila and New Luneta"; an untitled map showing the island chain extending from Borneo up to Formosa; and "Map of the City of Manila" showing the city and harbor, and extending from the Chinese cemetery down to the Native cemetery.
Under a section titled "Foreign Invaders", the guide book states "there have been times during the last century when the Filipinos themselves have arisen against their masters, and, in a feeble way, sought to break the chains binding them to Spain. But none of these revolutions proved successful. A succession of these petty revolts happened from time to time until 1898, when the fortunes of war relieved Spain of her Far Eastern possessions and placed the destinies of the Philippines in the hands of the United States".
