Description
This extremely rare atlas is illustrated with 30 folding maps depicting each time the same map "Carte pour l'histoire générale Ou se peuvent représenter toutes les Révolutions de l'Univers depuis les plus Anciennes Monarchies jusqu'à celles qui subsistent a present. Dressée sur les Mémoires de Mr. D. P. Par Michel Picaud de Nantes". 500 x 1210 mm (2 sheets joined). Modern frontiers make discreet appearances on the base outline; historical boundaries, changing 30-times and are supplied by hand coloring.
The map is covering Europe and Asia with relief shown pictorially, with inset map of ancient Greece and eastern and western hemispheres in both upper corners.
The map is of further interest for the use of Mer de Corée, the sea between Korea and Japan.
Modern frontiers make discreet appearances on the base outline; historical boundaries, changing 30-times and are supplied by hand coloring.
The title page reads : "Les Révolutions de l'Univers Offrant les Divisions politiques de differentes Régions analogues aux principales époques de l'histoire générale du monde, depuis la dispersion des Enfans de Noe, jusqu' a la réunion de la Lorraine a la France, Sous le Regne de Louis XV... : Divisée en 30 intervalles et representées en Soixante Cartes"
Walter Goffart who did extensive research has located two other copies of the atlas with engraved title page. A copy in BNF has text to the borders.
The authorship is claimed by "M.Dupré" presumably a pseudonym of E.A. Philippe de Prétot.
