The very rare 5th state with additional place names as Boston, Manhate (Manhattan), Montreal, Quebec and Port Royal, which are not present in State 4 (circa 1664) and by the plain border around the key at the left of the map (added to state 7 in 1677), which was present from the 1616 state onwards.
Interestingly this fifth state notes the route of an expedition undertaken in 1665 "pour aller au Iapon et alia China." It is possible that this is a reference to the explorations of Sieur de Groseilliers and his younger brother-in-law, Pierre-Esprit Radisson, who obtained the backing of the King of England to explore Hudson's Bay and are generally credited as the forerunners and founders of the Hudson's Bay Company, which would not be founded until several years after the printing of this edition of the map.

According to Philip Burden : "The engraving work was done by the house of Melchior Tavernier and was likely intended to be included in Champlain's Voyage et descouvertures faites en Nouvelle France, published in Paris in 1619. “
Only state 4 is rarer and Burden knows only a copy in the National Maritime Museum of Greenwich and the one illustrated in Karpinski and two dealer listings.
