L'Amerique Septentrionale qui fait partie des Indes Occidentales . . . [California island]

A fine example of the 1719 Chiquet's map of North America, with the accompanied related engraved French text sheet entitled "Description Abregé de l'Amerique Septentrionale."
The map includes a description of California in French text in the lower left corner and additional text and several ships and sea monsters in the Atlantic. Very detailed throughout, with excellent example of California as an Island on the second Sanson model and excellent detail in the Mississippi River Valley and Great Lakes regions.
The interior parts of North America reflect the explorations of the Jesuits and the Spanish in the Southwest. The British colonies are shown confined east of the Appalachians, with France in control of the region between there and the Mississippi River. Spain controls all of the west and Florida.

Jacques Chiquet (1673-1721). was a French cartographer. He only published two works; a small atlas, called 'Le Nouveau et Curieux Atlas Geographique et Historique' and an atlas of France called 'Noveau Atlas Francais'. Both were published in 1719. Chiquet died shortly after publishing these atlases consequently his works are rare. According to its title, this atlas was intended for the entertainment of emperors, kings, and princes!
