Description
Along the right hand side of the map 109 departments of France are mentioned. The 109 department is "Roer" covering the area in present Germany and Netherlands along the river Roer. This department was after the defeat of Napoleon (1814) divided between the Netherlands, England and Prussia.
Prepared by Tranquillo Mollo (1767 - 1837) was a native of Switzerland but active in Vienna, Austria. He was a graphic artist, publisher, printer, and art and music dealer. Mollo worked from 1792 first as an assistant in the music publishing firm "Artaria & Co. In 1793 he became partner, but on 14 July 1798 he left the company and co-founded with Franz Bernardini the music publishing house "T. Mollo & Co., which also sold art and maps. The cooperation with Bernardini lasted only one year.
In 1801, Mollo became a partner with Domenico Artaria, the son of Francesco Artaria, in his company, but already in 1802 Carlo Artaria sold his share to Mollo. In 1804 Mollo was one of the most important art publisher and took the lead in the Austrian maps and globes production. He worked with some French and English cartographers. In particular, the merge of the landscape views and costumes, pictures of the artist and engraver Wilhelm Friedrich Schlotterbeck earned the company significant revenue.
He introduced the in about 1800 in England invented aquatint technique in German-speaking countries. As a music publisher, he published some works of Ludwig van Beethoven.
From 1832 to 1839 the company was continued by the sons Eduard (1799-1842) and Florian Mollo (1803-1869).
