An early 20th-century reproduction of this important map of Japan was made in 1840 by German physician and traveler Philipp Franz Balthasar von Siebold. During his travels, Dr. Siebold spent six years (1823 - 1829) in Japan, where he acquired some detailed maps of Japan and Korea made by the Japanese surveyor and cartographer Ino Tadataka. Siebold combined his knowledge of both Western and Japanese maps to make the map. The map was included in 'Voyage au Japon.'
The map has in the upper left corner an inset with northernmost most tip of Honshu and in the lower right an inset with the Bay of Nagasaki with Decima. "De baai van Nagasaki. Opgenomen ... 1828".
Interestingly, in the upper left part we see the non-existent island "Takasima - I(sland) Argonaute," which was mapped by the captain of the British ship "HMS Argonaut," Captain James Colnett in 1789 at the coordinates 37º 32' N and 129º 50' E. and a little more south "Matsusima I(sland) Dagelet 37º 25' N and 130º 56' E de Lapérouse".
In the left the tip of Korea TSJO SJÖN v. KÔRAÏ the town of with Busan (Pu'san kai).

Von Siebold, born in Wurtzburg, Germany, and worked for the Dutch government as a doctor in Java. In Japan, where Von Siebold arrived in 1823 at the age of 27, he demonstrated his skills in medicine. His reputation allowed him to go beyond Deshima and to buy a house outside Nagasaki.
