Description
A nice large map of Iceland published by Homann Heirs. The country is divided up into four differently colored regions, lettered title to top of map, boxed mileage scales and explanation box in each bottom corner.
Good cartographic detail with rivers, volcanoes, bays, inlets, towns and mountains all shown in some depth. Homann was one of the most prolific and prominent map publishers of the 18th century.
In 1715 he came to the attention of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI, who made him "Imperial Cartographer", later that same year, Homann was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Science in Berlin.
Homann's prestigious title came with a number of important advantages including access to the most up to date cartographic information as well as the "Privilege". This was an early form of copyright offered to only a few individuals by the Holy Roman Emperor himself. It did offer a sort of limited protection, lasting on occasion for several years. Most of J. B. Homann maps printed between 1715 and 1730 bear the inscription "Cum Priviligio", or some variation.
Following Homann's death in 1726, the running of the firm passed down to his son, Johann Christoph Homann. Perhaps thinking that he would not long survive his father, Johann stated in his final will and testament, that the company would be inherited by his two head managers, namely, Johann Georg Ebersberger and Johann Michael Franz, and that it would publish only under the name 'Homann Heirs'.
