Boucher’s vision of French Indochina is a richly exotic and vibrantly colorful portrait. Presented as a geographically integrated entity, without any regional borders or boundaries between its constituent territories, it is a region seemingly entirely untouched by World War Two.
The only visible manifestation of conflict is the powerful battleship whose somewhat menacing and shadowy presence disturbs the otherwise peaceful waters of the South China Sea.
Boucher focuses on the richness of indigenous flora and fauna, with attractive vignettes of elephants, snakes, monkeys, deer, tigers &, leopards.
The region’s important natural resources are also highlighted, with beautifully presented scenes of rice planting, farming, logging and mining. With small illustrations of archaeological sites and temple ruins of Cambodia’s Angkor Wat, Kampong Cham and Vietnam’s ancient Imperial City of Hué.
Offshore, numerous oriental junks and fishing vessels ply their trade amid shoals of fish, turtle and a giant sea monster.
A stunningly designed large compass spur upper right is counterbalanced by an equally striking title cartouche lower left, whose orientaliste motifs and decoration further emphasize the region’s exotic indigenous culture &, much-prized commercial riches.

We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.

Shipments to Asia are $ 40 and rest of the world $50
