Description
Very rare 2-sheet map and the first map of the canton Fribourg (Freiburg) in a scale of Scale 1:120.000. South to the top.
The area shown on the map encompasses the whole of today's canton, including Bern and Freiburg. Illustrated with mountains, forests, castles, cities, the striking water network dominates the middle part, with the Neuenburger and the Murtensee as a contrast to the pre-alpine hills and mountain ranges.
The west sheet shows a heraldic composition in the top right: two Freiburg Heraldic shields are under the double-headed eagle coat of arms and the Imperial crown is made up of two lions, one with the pointing sword and one with the orb, flanked. In the bottom right, a view goes from the imposing Red Tower along the city wall down to the only partially visible cat tower and over the covered Saane to the vast city. You can see the mighty city church St. Niklaus, the Liebfrauenkirche with its pointed helmet, the large Jesuit college St. Michael on the Bisehügel, the tower-reinforced outer city wall and the harmonious rows of houses in the city quarters. Left above the cat tower shows the Augustinian monastery. Surrounded by triangular square Obere Matte, on which two tall trees stand.
Both sheets of paper have the watermark of a lily adorned, crowned shield with the letters H.Huber.
Examples in Swiss libraries: KUBF (FR 389, Collection Léon Glasson 33); MAHF (MAHF 2010-2100); StAF (CP I 133, CP II 600); StUB (Ryhiner Sammlung Nr. 3211:36 ; KLÖTI 2003, Band 2, Nr. 6203 S. 586), Universitätsbibliothek Basel (UBH Kartenslg Schw Ci 1), Universitätsbibliothek Bern (MUE Kart 404 FR: 2).
Reference: Dubas, Cartographie de Fribourg 1981, p.180-4, ill. 33 and 34. Marino Maggetti, FRANÇOIS-PIERRE VON DER WEID (ca. 1614-1688): Politiker, Feldmesser, Topograph und Kartograph.
