Description
The map is highly detailed, noting many cities, towns, rivers, islands and other topographical details.
After ruling France in 768, Charlemagne conquered Italy and, in 800, was crowned Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. For 14 years until his death, Charlemagne's empire united much of Western and Central Europe for the first time since the collapse of the Roman Empire.
The map includes a beautiful, engraved floral title cartouche in the top left quadrant. This map was published in the 1757 issue of Vaugondy’s “Atlas Universal”, one of the first atlases based upon actual surveys.
Gilles (1688-1766), Didier (ca.1723-1786) and Robert de Vaugondy were all map publishers, engravers, and cartographers active in Paris during the mid-18th century.
The father and son team were the inheritors to the important Sanson cartographic firm whose stock supplied much of their initial material.
