Description
On December 10, 1898 the Treaty of Paris officially ended the Spanish-American War. The United States took over much of Spain’s overseas holdings and the Philippines were bought by the United States for $20 million.
In 1906 Casper W. Hodgson prepared a very detailed map of the Philippine Islands according to the Treaty of Paris, showing islands, provinces, municipalities, townships, municipal districts and barrios in the Philippine Islands.
The map shows the Treaty of Paris limits in a dotted line in the China sea.
In upper left corner inset with Bantan Island and Babuyan Islands" (255x170mm.). In lower left inset of Sibuta Passage.
The map includes to the left a horizontal line composed of dots and dashes along the 118° longitude line.
Annotated as "PARIS TREATY LINE", it concurs with the line established in Treaty of Paris, which is the western boundary of the Philippines according to the treaty.
Scarborough Shoal (now Huangyan Dao) lies beyond the line, indicating that the initial naming of Huangyan Dao by the British in the 18th century was restored and the Spanish name of the 19th century was abolished.
According to the title the author Caspar W. Hodgson consulted original data furnished during the preparation of this map by Dr. David P. Barrows, Dr. N.M. Saleeby, the Honorable Dean C. Wocester and Governor E.Y. Miller, etc. . . The spelling of geographical names was revised by a committee composed of the Honorable T.H. Pardo de Tavera, Dr. N.M. Saleeby, C.Everett Conant and Emerson B. Christie.
Trinidad Hermenegildo Pardo de Tavera y Gorricho (1857-1925). Was an outstanding Filipinologist who wrote notable scholarly works in various fields of Oriental and Philippine studies; language, anthropology, folklore, etc. Trinidad received his licentiate in medicine at the Faculté de Médecine de Paris and his bachelor in medicine also in the same institution. In mid-1880s, he enrolled in École nationale des langues orientales vivantes (now Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales) and took courses under Pierre Étienne Lazare Favre.
