Description
This delightful small map is filled with place names including Mogul's Land, Great Desert, Tartary, Cathy, Yupi, Usbeck, Pekin, and much more besides. It identifies and locates the place the peace settlement was made between Russia and China in 1689.
The northern portions of Japan are indistinct with no clear coastline. Interestingly, above the main map is a narrow map detailing the route taken by Father Verbiest between Pekin and eastern Tartary in 1682. On a sheet with English text below and on verso.
Father Ferdinand Verbiest (1623 – 1688) was a Flemish Jesuit missionary in China active during the Qing dynasty. He was born in Pittem near Tielt in the County of Flanders (now part of Belgium). He is known as Nan Huairen in Chinese. He was an accomplished mathematician and astronomer and astonished the court of the Kangxi Emperor that European astronomy was more accurate than Chinese astronomy. He also set about correcting the Chinese calendar, and was later asked to rebuild and re-equip the Beijing Ancient Observatory, after being given the role of Head of the Mathematical Board and Director of the Observatory.
Verbiest worked as a diplomat, cartographer, and translator, he spoke Latin, German, Dutch, Spanish, Hebrew, Italian and Manchu. In addition to all of these undoubted accomplishments, he wrote more than thirty books.
