Description
Beautifully engraved and highly detailed, the map shows forests, roads, and many tiny villages. A very elaborate cartouche embellishes the lower corner with historical figures, a ship, globes and putti.
The sea at upper left is filled with two sailing ships, and several rowboats with men harpooning sea monsters. This is an early state, with a truncated coast of Siberia.
Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724) was a German geographer and cartographer, who also made maps of the Americas. He acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed 'Imperial Geographer' by Emperor Charles VI.
In 1716, Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848.
