Description
Here in a first edition without the privilege.
Diversi GLOBI TERR-AQUEI Statione Variante et Visu intercedente,.. Double hemisphere map surrounded by eight smaller projections depicting the world from various angles, and four smaller circular diagrams. (Ref. Shirley, World, 578.)
A very fine map of North & South America, engraved for Seutter by Gottfried Rogg. California is shown as an island, and one of the two huge and elaborate cartouches hides the lack of information about the northwest. (McLaughlin, 211, state II of V.)
Large-scale map of Asia extending from Europe to Japan. Terra Yedso is represented here as a large land mass to the north of Japan, the two being linked by a narrow causeway. With a note stating that Compagnies Land was discovered by Don Jean de Gama.
One interesting feature of this map is the representation of Nova Zembla which, in contrast to most contemporary maps of Asia, is shown here as a peninsula joined to the mainland of Asia. The Novae Phillippinae Insulae are placed a little too far to the south of the Caroline Islands. (Ref. Sweet, Mapping the continent of Asia, 120.)
Europa religionis Christianae. . . .
Africa Iuxta Navigationes et Observationes Recentissimas Aucta. . . A large and decorative map, filled with fictitious detail. The title cartouche, lower left, features a dragon, crocodile, natives and pyramids. (Ref. Tooley, p.110. Norwich, 80.)
Matthaus Seutter the elder first published his "Atlas Geographicus" in 1720 and added to the contents in subsequent editions under the title "Atlas Novus". He was succeeded in his business by his son Georg Mathaus Seutter, and after his death his son Albrecht Carl inherited, but died early in 1762. Matthaus' widow then sold the business to her sons-in-law Tobias Conrad Lotter and Johann Michael Probst, who eventually left it to M.A. Lotter Matthaus' grandson.
