Description
The inclusion of pencil notations of prices, sizes and finishing options and stamps indicating order numbers are evidence of the fascinating role of the works as working designs.
A beautiful and unique historical record of French decorative art.
For almost 300 years, since it was produced under the patronage of Louis XV, Sevres porcelain has been highly regarded for its high quality and beautiful design.
The city of Desvres is in the middle of the hills of Boulogne. It is about 19 km east of Boulogne sur Mer and about sixty km south of the city of Calais. The art of faience appeared for the first time in Italy during the fifteenth century and will gradually gain the whole of Europe. Jean-François Sta, opened the first earthenware desvres in 1764.
One of his closest collaborator at the time, François Fourmaintraux, strived to perpetuate the tradition of the industry of the earthenware of Desvres since 1804. From this date, the specific industry of faience Desvres quickly developed and began to interest the nobility and even the court of the King.
Gabriel Fourmaintraux was born on May 27, 1886 in Desvres. He studied at the " l’école supérieure de la céramique" in Sèvres. In 1905 he founded the factory called "à la poterie" and started the production of small porcelain objects such as vases, ashtrays, decorative trinkets very carefully decorated.
He produced: lamps, mushroom lamps inspired by Gallé, Daum and Chinese/Japanese decoration.
This porcelain production ended in the years 1925-30 for economic reasons.
A museum (A la belle Époque de la Faience de Desevres) has been established in what were Gabriel Fourmaintraux’s workshops. It is located just outside of Paris at 114 rue Jean Jaures in Desevres.
