Delineationem Liberae in silesia dynastiae Drachenberg . . .

Scarce map by Johann Christian Berger, of the Barony of Żmigród (=Drachenberg) with nearby fortress and sizable baroque garden, both surrounded by waters of Barycz river. Showing flows, channels, watercourses, rivers, ponds, and lakes (some still existing), located in a densely forested area is a striking feature of this map.

The map was drawn by Johann Christian Berger, a Wrocław (=Breslaw) clerk for whom it was the only cartographic work.
The map served between 1676-1680 for civil litigation regarding real estate division between Hatzfeld and Nesselrode families whose coats of arms adorn the title cartouche.
The map was printed in Amsterdam; why and how Berger’s manuscript model arrived in the Netherlands is not known, nor who did the engraving and printing.
The map is mentioned for the first time in von Hallmensfeld J. F., "Gelehrte Neuigkeiten Schlesiens," June 1736, p.256, and dates the first edition for 1675 (map no.103) and mentions an undated “other edition [of the same map]” (no.104).

The map has a Latin description of the Barony entitled “Drachenberg,” in two columns on each side. An edition with German text also exists.

Half a century later (1726), Petrus II Schenk published a copy of Berger’s map. Schenk made some small changes to the map.
