Description
There is a stunning title cartouche flanked by bears and wind heads, surmounted by the two-headed Imperial Eagle. The table in the top right corner uses Russian and Tatar terms. Some areas of the map show coasts that have not been fully mapped (Novaya Zemlya), and the mythical "Jedso" and "Terre De Compagnie" appear.
An interesting map, very detailed with many cities, towns, and provincial boundaries. The inclusion of Riga and Smolensk near western border In NW, Kyiv on the western border in the Southwest, Crimea, and Dagestan in the South, Partial inclusion of Circassia and Astrakhan, and before Russian territorial claims in the Caucasus.
The Far East has a southern border far north of the present-day border. This large-format, continuous map was one of the only complete maps of Russia available during the middle of the 18th century. The map is scarce - Worldcat shows only four institutional locations.
Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688–1766), also known as Le Sieur or Monsieur Robert, and his son, Didier Robert de Vaugondy (1723–1786), were leading cartographers in France during the 18th century.
In 1757, Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy published “The Atlas Universel,” one of the most important atlases of the 18th century.
