Description
The map includes topographic details, a strap-work mileage cartouche.
The map is dedicated to Gabriel de Sainte-Marie, Archbishop of Reims from 1622 to 1629.
This is the first printed map of the diocese of Reims, drawn up in 1623 by Jean Jubrien, a topographer born in Chalons, and one of the the most important regional cartographers of the first half of the seventeenth century.
The first edition dated 1623 was published in 1632 by Melchior Tavernier in the Geographical Theater of the Kingdom of France.
This is the second edition published by Antoine de Fer (dated) 1646.
Considered one of the most accurate maps of the region, the map of Jubrien served as a model for many cartographers until the eighteenth century.
The map was published in 4 sheets joined together.
Cartographers: Antoine de Fer (ca 1614 - 1673) was a French enlumineur, print dealer and publisher. Specializing in geography, he joined Nicolas Berey, Melchior Tavernier and Jacques Lagniet. He was the father of Nicolas de Fer.
Jean Jubrien (1569-1641) was a French surveyor and mapmaker.
