Description
Coastal Map of West Sumatra, an island in Western Indonesia. It is from Le Neptune Oriental.
Jean-Baptiste d'Après de Mannevillette (1707-1780) was a French sailor, navigator, and hydrographer active in the mid-18th century. As a young man he studied mathematics and navigation in Paris before earning his sea legs as a commissioned officer on a merchant vessel bound for the West Indies. Mannevillette eventually attained the rank of Captain and had numerous voyages around Africa to India and China, where he collected and revised a number of regional nautical charts which he corrected and published in Neptune Oriental in 1745.
