Description
A richly colored view of what was at the time one of the most important and largest cities in Spanish America. As a result, Cartagena was heavily defended, as is evidenced by the tower at the harbor's entrance, bristling with cannon. A chain can also be seen securing the harbour entrance
Ships and sailing craft of all shapes and sizes can be seen in both the foreground and the background of this fascinating, 'busy' engraving. The' thriving' city can be seen stretching across the breadth of the engraving, people are seen fishing and in rowing boats in the water.
Founded in 1533 by the Spanish commander, Pedro de Heredia, the cities strategic location between the Magdalena and Sinu Rivers gave it ease of access to the interior of New Grenada, and made it a main port for trade between Spain and its overseas empire.
The city was named after the port city of Catagena in Murcia in southeast Spain, where most of Heredia's sailors had resided. By the 17th century, Cartagena has become an important slave market in the Spanish New World.
This view appeared in John Ogilby's seminal work America: Being the Latest, and Most Accurate Description of the New World. published in London. This in itself is an English translation of Arnold Montanus' Die Nieuwe en onbekende Weereld. . . which was published in Amsterdam in the same year (1671).
