Description
An extremely scarce map of New England, from Connecticut through Maine (included as part of the Massachusetts Bay colony) published towards the end of the American Revolutionary War. This work has hardly been seen in the market over the past three decades. It identifies many prominent colonial forts, rivers and mountains.
There is particularly good detail of the Cape Cod/Martha?s Vineyard coasts. Vermont is presented as a territory separate from the other New England states and joined with New York State.
Brion de la Tour was an engineer by profession and held the post of ?Ingenieur-Geographe du Roi?, to the French crown. He is known for his numerous statistical works and also published several well known elaborately decorated atlases, including coastal surveys/charts of France and Great Britain.
This map is very different in content and style from Brion de la Tour?s more generally available pieces. Quite rare and desirable.
