Description
A HIGHLY IMPORTANT COPY OWNED BY DANIEL WILSON, BISHOP OF CALCUTTA AND A MANUSCRIPT LOG OF HIS VOYAGES TO AND FROM INDIA AND THE FAR EAST INCLUDING SINGAPORE, MALAYA & CEYLON - ALL WRITTEN IN HIS OWN HAND.
The log is written mainly to the front and rear endpapers, but also on several maps as well as the contents and title page. Inscribed by Wilson on Front Endpaper "This book, my incomparable companion for 35 years, I leave to my dearest & most beloved daughter Eliza Emma. D. Calcutta January 12 1857" (Eliza Emma Wilson b1814 daughter of Daniel Wilson and Wife of Rev. Josiah Bateman, who authored "The Life of The Right Rev. Daniel Wilson")
Second inscription reads "D. C. Barnsbury Park, Islington, 1845 rebound. Also rebound Oct 1856. First purchased in 1821" The earlier voyages are noted at the rear of the volume - From the 1830's.
The first entry at the front of the volume reads "London to Calcutta. Prince of Wales in Cabin. Sept 1 1846" This is referring to Wilson's Voyage back to India after laying out plans with the Queen to build Calcutta Cathedral.
Dates, distance travelled, Longitude/Latitude etc follows on the next couple of pages, and is typical for all entries in the volume. The following Voyage is titled "Calcutta to Bombay in Pilot."
Subsequent voyages include and are titled: From Bombay to Allepie (Alleppey) Allepie to Columbo.Colombo to Madras. Voyage from Madras to Calcutta. Calcutta to Straits. Landed at Penang.Six days in Penang. Penang to Malacca. Arrived at Malacca. Singapore. Sarawack, and Borneo. Sailed for Singapore. Arrived at 2. Singapore. Sailed for Malacca. Arrived at Malacca. Sailed for Penang.
Many more Voyages noted at front of volume, as well as names of Captains and Ships he travelled on. The rear of the volume concerns Voyages mostly from 1832. The maps that are annotated are generally the Asian Maps as well as the World.
