Description
This is a very fine, typical French atlas, complete in its four volumes and very nice contempt. calf binding. It is in its rare first edition. The first edition of this atlas was published in separate parts—thus, each volume has its own title pages and dates.
Vol. I: 57 double-folio leaves (numb.1-57), all engraved, including an engraved ornamental main title in rococo style, a dedication leaf, and a table of contents. It deals with the historical development of cosmography, geology, astronomy, oceanography, winds, streams, etc., and illustrates this in a series of impressive pictures with globes, spheres, continents, world systems, etc. Maps of the continents, globe- projections etc.
- Vol. II: 71 double-folio leaves (numb. 1-70), all engraved, including a double-page engraved title (different from the title in vol. 1) and a table of contents (unnumbered). It deals mainly with the creation of the world and holy history.
The first edition of this atlas, which could be called an Atlas-series, as the different parts were sold separately, thus each volume having its own title. The subjects covered in volume I demonstrate how closely astronomy and geography were allied at this date,
especially when presented as a body of knowledge to be consumed at home.
These engravings were luxury goods, indicating the wealthy audience they aimed at.
A fifth volume was announced but is unknown to the bibliographies.
Claude Buy de Mornas, who died in 1783, was a Paris historian and Royal Geographer.
Reference: Phillips No. 628.
The beautiful title pages were engraved by Martinet and co-published with Desnos.
- Vol. II: 71 double-folio leaves (numb. 1-70), all engraved, including a double-page engraved title (different from the title in vol. 1) and a table of contents (unnumbered). It deals mainly with the creation of the world and holy history.
- Vol. III: 62 double-folio leaves (numb. 71-130), all engraved,
including a double-page engraved title (the same as in vol. II) and a table of
contents (unnumbered).
Volume II and III deal mainly with historical geography and mapping, including 84 hand-colored maps.
- Vol. IV: 8 double-folio leaves (numb. 131-206), all engraved,
including a double-page unnumbered engraved title (the same as in vol. II) and a table of contents (unnumbered). Dealing with historical geography.
Illustrated with 268 plates mostly in original outline color, maps and astronomical plates, and b/w plates with tables, text, etc. All maps and illustrations have engraved text on both sides. Each plate has a decorative engraved border printed from a different plate. Each country has one or two pages of descriptive text. The text is also engraved with an interesting section of two engraved pages A and B on Persia.
A fifth volume was announced but is unknown to the bibliographies.
Claude Buy de Mornas, who died in 1783, was a Paris historian and Royal Geographer.
The atlas contains a series of 17 decorative terrestrial and celestial engravings published in Paris in 1761, entitled 'Climates of the Hours and the Months'. These engravings indicate details such as the length of day at different latitudes. Each presents various astronomical and geographical ideas, with a central diagram, copious text in two columns down either side and floral, decorative frame-like borders.
