Description
According to Howgego this appears to be a 5th state published between 1751 and 1754. No new imprint has been found for this edition but the map has a number of minor alterations and additions, e.g. "the Kings Old Road" and "The Kings New Road" have been added along the roads in Hyde Park.
"HANNUEL" has been corrected to "HANWELL" and "Peace Bridge" in Barnes Common, to " Piests Bridge".
John Rocque, who was a French Huguenot, emigrated with the rest of his family to London in the 1730s, where he began to ply his trade as a surveyor of gentleman’s estates, and with plans of Kensington Gardens, and Hampton Court. However, in 1737 he applied his surveying skills to a much great task, that of surveying the entire built-up area of London.
Begun in the March of 1737, the map would take nine years to produce, eventually being engraved upon 24 sheets of copper and published in 1746.
Whilst engaged upon this project Rocque was also working on the present map of the “Country ten miles round London”, on a scale of 5½ inches to one statute mile, or one quarter of the scale of the large survey.
This map in 16-sheets was completed and published in 1746 and several editions appeared before his death in 1762.
His widow Mary Ann carried on the business for a few years, until, in the late 1760s, she transferred the plates of the map to the publishers Carrington Bowles and Robert Sayer.
Printed in 16 sheets, the map is set within a decorative border. Its title features in English, Latin and French along the top, with emblematic figures below the City arms at top center, and the compass star at top left.
The map is dedicated to Richard Boyle at bottom center.
Scales are given at the foot of the map in versts, leagues, toises, yards and miles. A key to symbols distinguishing orchards, arable land, formal parkland and gardens, pasture, and woodland is included at bottom right.
